In 2025–2026, with support from Academic Affairs at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY, I launched what was originally called the HIPs Story Project, an effort to document how faculty are using High Impact Practices in their teaching. I set out to explore where HIPs have been implemented and sustained across the curriculum. What practices do faculty find most meaningful and motivating? How have HIPs shaped their teaching? Which strategies were used for a time and then set aside, and why? And ultimately, what drives faculty to keep doing this work?
This first collection of interviews offers a starting point for renewed conversations about High Impact Practices at LaGuardia.
In 2026–2027, I hope to extend the project to include more interviews, with both faculty and students, while keeping the focus on faculty voices and experiences.
This project wouldn’t have been possible without the technical wizardry of Thomas Rospigliosi, who coordinated and produced the audio and video segments. He was joined by Phyo Phyo and Rohit Kumar Ja, my thanks to both of them as well.
I’m also grateful to Academic Affairs for its support, and especially to Eric Hofmann, Pablo Avila, and Ellen Quish for championing this work from the start.
And finally, deep thanks to the faculty and staff who shared their experiences with HIPs. I’m so appreciative of their time, stories, and insights. I know you’ll find their work inspiring and their commitment to our students truly energizing.
